Overcoming Back Pain Injury

Back pain injury is familiar to just about everyone, whether it's the ache that comes after a day of heavy yard work, or the constant, tearing pain that's with you all the time, back pain is a common complaint.

Another thing so important to reducing back pain is posture. Slouching or standing in a swaybacked position exaggerates your back's natural curves and leads to muscle fatigue, weakness and injury.

Stand straight with your head up, shoulders straight, chest forward and stomach tight.

Good posture relaxes your muscles and requires less effort to keep your body balanced.

If you stand a lot, be sure to rest one foot on a stool, hold reading material at eye level and don't bend forward to work. Change your position often, and consider a thirty second break every 15 minutes to stretch, move or relax.

If you're at a desk all day, choose a chair that supports your back and keeps your feet on the floor and try to keep your hips and knees at right angles to one another.

Remove bulky objects from your back pockets like wallets and cell phones because they can interfere with the balance in your lower back.

Be sure to position your chair and computer monitor so that you're sitting up and don't have to hold your back in an awkward position to work.

When on the phone, don't cradle the receiver between your shoulder and ear so that your hands are free for other things.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - How It Can Be Diagnosed and Managed

There are established procedures and guidelines that would enable diagnose the presence of Rheumatoid arthritis accurately without making mistakes and without having to apply the wrong management.

1. History: History taking and physical examination will give the doctor a clue as to the actual cause or predisposing factors to the disease condition.
2. Synovial fluid examination: This shows a remarkable abnormality. The colour is turbid (cloudy); it has low viscosity and clots on standing. It also contains many cells.
3. Rheumatoid factor: Blood sample reveals the presence of high molecular weight protein known as the Rheumatoid factor (RF). This is diagnostic.

Rheumatoid arthritis is incurable but can be managed to give relief to the patient and minimize the damage to the joints. The treatment is to help make the patient more comfortable, prevent or correct deformities and maintain or restore the function of the affected joints.

Drugs
1. Analgesics (Anti-inflammatory drugs)
2. Anti-malarial
3. Corticosteroids

1. Anti-inflammatory drugs: This group of drugs otherwise known as the 'Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) have three basic properties- Analgesic, Anti-inflammatory and Anti-pyretic. Aspirin is the drug of choice. Other drugs in this group include Indomethacin (Indocid), Phenylbutazone (Butazolidin), Tanderil (Oxyphenylbutazone), Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Naproxen, Celecoxib, etc.

These drugs should be used under strict medical supervision because of their ability to cause gastric ulceration and bleeding. They should also not be taken on an empty stomach.

2. Anti-malarial drugs: Anti-malarial drugs like Chloroquine and Quinacrine also provide a great relief against the inflammation of the joints.

3. Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids such as Prednisolone, Betamethasone, Dexamethasone and Hydrocortisone are also useful in the control of pain, and stiffness as well as improve physical and mental well-being. Corticosteroids should strictly be prescribed by medical personnel.

Other treatment measures include:
a. Application of heat: Wet heat in the form of hot baths helps to improve blood supply to the joint and control spasm thereby relieving pain. Dry heat (Infrared bulbs or hot water bag) can also be applied over the joint to provide relief.

b. Splinting: Braces, bivalve casts or splints can be applied over the joint to relieve pain and spasm. The splints also help prevent dislocations and deformity. They also promote rest of the joint and correct deformity.

Rest: Patient should have enough rest if seriously ill. Patient should be rested on a bed that is flat and firm with a bed board under the mattress. A bed cradle should be put in place to keep the bed clothes off the joint.

Exercise: Patient should be advised to exercise joints mildly several times daily. Patient should also be told to avoid over-exercising himself up to point of pain and fatigue. Patient should maintain a balance between rest and activity.

Pain relief: Sedatives and tranquillizers can be given in addition to drugs already discussed above and patient taught to recognize the side effects of the drugs.

Nutrition/elimination: Fluid intake should be increased if it is not contraindicated. Balanced diet should be given in frequent small amounts. Constipation can be prevented by the use of stool softeners or by increasing food rich in fibres.

Physical care: Pressure areas should be taken care of regularly to prevent pressure sore. Joints should be observed for redness, swelling, heat, deformity and limitation of movement and patient should be assisted with physical care e.g. bathing if pain is severe.

Choosing a Child-Friendly Mattress

Buying your child's first mattress may be considered a rite of passage. Just as cribs are designed for infants, children have special needs for mattresses that are different from adults. So it's important to choose the right mattress.

To ease your stress, here are five tips to help you choose the mattress that will best support your child in getting a good night's sleep.

1. Know what materials to avoid: There is growing widespread concern regarding the effects of potentially harmful chemicals. Your child may spend 10 to 12 hours a day sleeping on that mattress for many years, so avoid heavily-treated mattresses containing polyurethane foam, eco-foam (which is mostly polyurethane foam), vinyl (PVC), phthalates, chemical fire retardants or barriers and industrial chemicals. Many chemicals can "off-gas" from the mattress and be inhaled by your child.

2. Know what materials to look for: Mattresses made with organic and non-toxic materials are best. A good choice is a mattress made with organic cotton fabrics and filling. Remember that not all organic mattresses are alike. For example, "natural latex" or "coir" may actually be allergenic for your child. Look for a mattress that has earned the recommendation or certification of a reputable organization (for example, GREENGUARD or "Healthy Child Healthy World").

3. Look for non-toxic waterproofing and dust mite protection: Avoid vinyl, nylon, polyurethane. Ask for FDA food-grade polyethylene, the safest way to waterproof and dust mite proof a mattress.

4. Look for a firmer mattress: Children's bones and spines are still growing, and, as such, pediatricians recommend firmer mattresses to encourage proper bone growth.

5. High prices don't necessarily mean better quality: While it's true you may pay more for a good quality child's mattress, a higher price doesn't always mean a better mattress. Make sure you do your research and focus on the materials used to make the mattress.

Natural Latex Foam Mattresses: A Healthy Alternative to Memory Foam

Did you know that natural latex foam mattresses, made from the latex sap of the rubber tree, are a much safer alternative to the popular memory foam mattresses? Memory foam mattresses, like most commercially available mattresses, are made from petroleum based polyurethane foam, an extremely flammable material. Known as "solid gasoline" by firefighters, the polyurethane foam in most commercially available mattresses burns so furiously that strict new fire resistance standards have been written into law, starting with California in 2005 and going nationwide in 2006. These strict new fire resistance standards are being met by tripling the amount of fire retardant chemicals, called PDBEs, that are added to manufacture memory foam mattresses and mattress toppers.

Most mattress purchasers are unaware of the fire danger posed by polyurethane mattresses. But the greater danger may be the higher concentrations of PDBEs used to help prevent combustion in memory foam mattresses. PDBEs build up in the body in ways similar to banned PCBs, and they have been linked to cancer and other illnesses. PDBEs have already been banned in Europe, but not in North America. Some medical researchers believe that the extra load of PDBEs in newly made mattresses will cause millions of cancer cases in the coming decades. Because you lie directly on your mattress for 8 hours every night, your body has its greatest contact with the dangerous PDBEs while you sleep, and they pass right through your skin.

Organic Cradle Mattress

The solution to the PDBE problem is to do what the Europeans already do, sleep on natural latex mattresses. Natural latex mattresses are made from the sap of the tropical rubber tree. Natural latex foam does not burn well, and most natural latex mattresses are also quilted with organic cotton and wool which makes them very fire resistant, complying with all current fire codes.

Latex foam comes a variety of densities for different firmness needs, and, unlike memory foam, it doesn't have to heat up to cradle the body--the effect is immediate. Most people find 100% natural latex foam mattresses to be incredibly comfortable, relieving pressure points and improving circulation. Another great characteristic of latex is its durability. Latex mattresses have been known to last up to 30 years. Because of their resilience, latex mattresses do not need to be turned like innerspring mattresses.

Because latex mattresses do not have innersprings, they require a firmer foundation than the traditional boxsprings. Latex mattresses can be used with a platform bed, a slat foundation which looks like traditional boxsprings, but has slats on the top, or a solid wood foundation, which also looks like boxsprings but has a plywood top usually covered by fabric.

Chemical-free natural latex mattresses are produced by a number of North American manufacturers, the largest of which are Vivetique - Crown City Mattress, located in South El Monte, California, and Obasan, located in Ottawa, Canada. There are also a number of European importers of natural latex foam mattresses, the biggest of which is Green Sleep from Belgium.

Retailers of natural latex mattresses include a variety of local mattress stores who carry products from these manufacturers. There are also nationwide web retailers, like Dax Stores, which usually have the best prices for these natural latex mattresses.
