There are many things a parent to be must consider prior to the arrival of a new baby. Everything from baby proofing the home to putting together a nursery for the wee one are things that every parents deals with even if it's not their first child. Preparing for the coming of a new baby can be both stressful and time consuming as well. This is especially true for those expecting their first child. Even with Grandparents, friends, and other parents offering advice the process can devour ones free time and make a person feel as though they'll never have everything ready in time.

As a father of two young children I have experienced many of the overbearing emotions that come along with a pregnancy. In the case of my wife and our two children preparing for the arrival of our two children was a joy, yet at times it felt more like working for a horrific employer who gives ridiculously impossible deadlines that can't be met regardless of how much overtime you put in. Perhaps these emotions were brought about by the sheer level of excitement and apprehension that accompanied the announcement of the impending births.

When my wife and I found out that she was pregnant with our first child we initially felt a great deal of excitement and started making plans to convert our home office into a nursery. Our excitement quickly turned to trepidation as we realized just how much work was going to be involved and how expensive the project was going to be. Though this was one of the more affordable aspects of preparing the nursery, my wife and I found ourselves constantly disagreeing on the theme of the room. After a week or so of debates and headaches we finally settled on an underwater theme complete with fish, mermaids and whales. The painting of the nursery commenced and completed within the span of three days and it turned out rather well.

Over the course of two months our office was transformed into a nursery and we then turned our sights to baby proofing the home. There was a brief period of time where my wife and I considered postponing the baby proofing as our child would not be mobile for quite some time however we ultimately decided that it would be easier to prepare now rather than later or after the baby was able to get around on her own. We were also surprised at how complicated this process was too as it involved more than simply plugging up outlets and putting child proof locks on doors. We quickly found that we would need to secure all of our loose wires and cables, and better organize our movie collections as many of our movies where on shelves that could be dangerous to young children. We spent a good portion of our budget on baby proofing our home and in the end everything got put away, organized, secured to a wall or the floor and everything turned out just fine.

Though the process was somewhat difficult and stressful it was definitely an experience that I will look back on with fond remembrance. We went through many of the same things during preparations for our second child albeit in a much more subdued manner. This was partly due to the fact that the home was already baby proofed before child number two was announced and in part because new baby would be occupying the same nursery. Preparing a home for the arrival of a newborn is both taxing and rewarding however practicing patience and focusing on the end result will always make the process more enjoyable.

Braiding is good for your baby's hair as long as the braids are not too tight. Braiding the hair too tight pulls on the scalp and can cause headaches, unnecessary tension and severe hair loss, even at a young age. It also can have a negative impact on the hair, pulling it out of the scalp by the roots causing thinness around the edges and hairline and then traumatic baldness. You can always tell if someone has worn braids too tight or for a long period of time without taking a break as the person's hairline starts to recede and the braids will start further and further back off the face presenting a balding look from the front.

As for your baby, it's okay to section the hair off and start to pinch up the hair in those sections and braid them if long enough. You can put the small hair bands around the pinched up braids, but be very careful. Wash the hair as often as you bathe the baby to avoid conditions such as cradle cap where there is a buildup of scales and dandruff due to not washing often. If you are following this regimen, soon you will see the hair take off to new heights.

Another thing I have seen mothers do with their babies is they lay the baby down in one position repeatedly without ever changing the sleeping position. If you continually lay the baby on the one side every time she goes down for a nap, that side of the hair will never get a chance to grow and the baby's hair will be rubbed out creating a bald spot. This not only happens to black babies, but I have seen this happen to babies of other races too. That is why it is important to make sure you change positions lying the baby on the right side for a nap, the left side for the next nap, and even on the back sometimes, but NEVER put the baby on the stomach. Putting the baby to sleep on the stomach can cause a fatal condition known as SIDS where the baby will stop breathing because the baby's neck is not yet strong enough to support its head.

Make sure your baby or child is getting the required amount of fluids. Dehydration can starve the growing process. Not only do you need to hydrate the hair on the outside, but you can also do this from the inside. When the body is well hydrated, not only do the internal organs benefit, but your child's skin, nails and hair benefit tremendously, and you are paving the way for successful hair growth for your baby and older children.

Wryneck Torticollis - Medical Treatments and Alternative Therapies

Wryneck and torticollis are characterized by painful spasms in the neck. A wryneck usually occurs suddenly and is self limited, often vanishing mysteriously. In contrast, torticollis comes on gradually; at first it is intermittent, but it keeps worsening until affected muscles are chronically contracted and the neck posture remains abnormal more or less permanently. Wryneck and torticollis are relatively common, affecting about 1 in 10,000 people, with women slightly outnumbering men. What causes the muscle spasms is often unclear. In some acute cases, entrapment of a nerve arising from the upper spinal cord is responsible. Infection, inflammation, dislocation of a joint in the neck, a thyroid disorder, and a tumor are other possible causes. Heredity is also a possible factor. In congenital torticollis, a baby is born with an injured or malformed neck muscle. Many patients have other involuntary muscle tics and spasms, or spasmodic dystonia, as well. Doctors are frequently unable to identify any single reason for wryneck or torticollis. In the past, cases were often attributed to hysteria and treated as a mental disorder. Physicians now agree that although torticollis can lead to emotional problems, those problems are rarely, if ever, the underlying cause of the affliction.

Newborns should be carefully examined for signs of muscular asymmetry affecting the neck. Adults will be questioned about past nerve and muscle disorders, and recent accidents involving the head and neck. Medical Treatments

However, this treatment has not yet been approved by the FDA for neck problems.

Surgery

When other approaches have been unsuccessful, neurosl1rgery to sever some of the nerves that control the neck muscles may help.

Alternative Therapies

A combination of physical therapy and massage sometimes provides temporary relief, and if started in the first year of life, can cure congenital torticollis. The daily regimen includes stretching the shortened neck muscle that holds the head at an abnormal angle. Other alternative therapies include:

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Six sessions with a qualified acupuncturist may provide relief and halt the muscle spasms. Applying pressure to the jaw may give temporary relief.

Biofeedback Training

This technique, which helps a patient control and relax neck muscles, is now a standard treatment.

Chiropractic

Many chiropractors specialize in the treatment of neck pain, including wryneck, using manipulation and electrical stimulation.

Hydrotherapy. Whirlpool baths, alternating hot and cold needle showers, and underwater massage are used by some physical therapists to alleviate muscle spasms and neck pain.

Massage Therapies

Traditional massage, perhaps combined with physical therapy, can be helpful. Others find the more vigorous massage of rolfing or shiatsu beneficial.

Meditation

People who have tension induced wryneck might benefit from meditation and breathing exercises.

Self Treatment

Application of heat can sometimes ease simple wryneck. A battery operated vibrating neck massager that can be worn like a scarf while you read, work at a desk, or do chores may also help. If you work at a computer or use the telephone often, take frequent breaks. Change positions, shrug your shoulders, and gently move your head from side to side. Don't cradle the phone between shoulder and neck; instead, try a speakerphone or headphone. Maintain good posture, keep your shoulders down, and avoid sudden head movements. Try to sleep on your back, using a rolled neck pillow. If you suffer chronic neck pain, use a special pillow that provides hot and cold therapy. Sold at medical supply stores, these have a gel pack that can be cooled in the freezer or heated in the microwave and then inserted into a sleeve that fits under the neck. On a long car or plane trip, rest your head on a traveler's neck pillow. If a spasm develops, rub it with an ice cube wrapped in a plastic bag using a circular motion. If this doesn't help, take a hot shower. A pulsating shower massage on the tensed muscle may relax it.

Other Causes of Neck Spasms

Whiplash and other neck injuries can cause muscle spasms and pain. In some cases, tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder caused by potent antipsychotic drugs, affects the neck.
